Welcome to Rattan Cane Furniture
Meadow Hampton's range of rattan cane furniture will be available to purchase (very soon!) in January 2012.
What is Rattan Cane?
Rattan cane furniture is a type of palm, contrary to popular belief they are not trees as rattan cane grows in a similar way to a vine, climbing up and around other plants. It shares many similarities with bamboo, however it is not hollow but solid and ranges in diameter from a few millimetres to 7cm. Growing up to 180 metres long rattan cane is found primarily in South East Asia.
Furniture Uses
Rattan cane is used in many furnishings. Quite often the skin is taken off the cane and is used as a weaving material, the core is then used for a huge variety of rattan cane furniture. Rattan cane is a fantastic material for cane furniture making as it is lighter than wood but just as durable and is also quite flexible. All this makes rattan cane a perfect material for baskets, chairs and other lightweight furniture.
