Rattan cane furniture has many advantages over wood, bamboo and upholstered furniture

- Rattan cane furniture is much more flexible than bamboo which is brittle and stiff.
- Rattan cane furniture is less likely to split than wood and bamboo.
- Rattan cane furniture is lighter than wood allowing for furniture to be moved more easily yet still retain strength.
- Rattan cane furniture is suitable for conservatory and garden furniture as it doesn't fade in direct sunlight (unlike upholstered furniture) or react badly to extreme temperature changes (unlike wood).
- The core of the rattan cane has the advantage of not squeaking when put under pressure by sitting or lying down.

- Rattan cane furniture is environmentally friendly because it is a quick growing crop, which means it is sustainable. Harvesting the crop is also labour intensive, providing income for many of the poorest societies in South East Asia.
